Abstract

Malnutrition related diabetes mellitus (MRDM) is rare type of diabetes which is associated with long term malnutrition .It is classified in 2 subgroups by the American Diabetes Association as Fibrocalcific or fibrocalculous pancreatic diabetes (FCPD) and Protein-deficient pancreatic diabetes (PDPD)/protein-deficient diabetes mellitus (PDDM). This review summarises about the diagnosis criteria , prevalence and pathophysiology of FCPD and PDDM. Various clinical studies have been carried out to understand the impact of malnutrition on the glucose homeostasis. Different animal models have been developed to study the pathophysiological aspects of MRDM. This review also focuses on the management of diabetes in terms of Medical nutrition treatment (MNT) , pain management, exocrine management, diabetes management and ayurvedic management .
