Once approved, manuscripts are posted publicly on ESSOAr and will receive a DOI. Submissions appear in the order they are approved within each category. They are citable as a preprint and cannot be removed or withdrawn after approval. Retractions will be handled by the Editorial and Advisory Boards and will follow leading practices in scholarly publishing.
All published content represents the view and interpretations of the authors only. No endorsement of the content is implied by ESS Open Archive or any of its sponsors, Authorea, or Advisory or Editorial Board members, or the authors' affiliations. Authors must register through ORCid or Authorea before submitting. Registration is not required to read or access published content. There is no charge for registration and submission, or accessing content. See the FAQ and About pages for further information.

Submitting a Preprint
Preprints can be submitted directly or via transfer from participating journals or some conferences. In the case of transfers, metadata and files are transferred from a journal submission system. ESS Open Archive will also soon allow one-click submission transfer from the archive to a participating journal.
Before direct submission, authors should have the following files and information ready:
  1. A file that represents the complete preprint, poster, or conference presentation, including figures, tables, references, appendices, supplements that can be included in the single source file, and acknowledgements. The manuscript must include a title that is less than 300 characters and an abstract that is less than 3000 characters. Only one file can be uploaded as the primary preprint or presentation archive. Files may be in DOC, PDF, or TEX format. PDF files should not include embedded comments or digital signatures.  ESSOAr will try and identify and fill in the title and abstract for you.
  2. Links to datasets, software, and other files that directly support the manuscript. ESSOAr strongly encourages authors to follow leading practices in depositing and citing data and software and in identifying samples.
  3. Files for any supplements needed to support the paper. All files, including supplemental files, have a combined size limit of 1 gb. Supplements should only be used for files that cannot otherwise be deposited in repositories. Jupyter notebooks are welcome as supplements.
  4. Information on the co-authors. Submitting authors must enter full names of co-authors.  The entered authors much match completely, and in order, the authors listed on the main PDF file.  Mismatches will be returned for revision. Authors with Authorea accounts will auto-fill on the Add Collaborator screen.
